Choose needlepoint yarn or thread suited to your canvas mesh size and the stitches you plan to use. The number of strands needed will depend on the thickness of your yarn and the coverage you want. Tapestry wool, Persian wool, and stranded embroidery floss offer different options for stitching your custom needlepoint canvas. If you plan to frame your finished custom photo tapestry, allow extra blank canvas around your design for stitching, stretching, and framing.
TIP: Need extra space around your design for framing or finishing? Add a white border in the online design tool and include it within your selected dimensions. We print to the dimensions you choose with 3/4inch added white space, so any extra border must be included in your layout.
Needlepoint canvas has an open mesh structure, so photos and artwork with clear details and strong color contrast are easier to follow as you stitch. White areas remain unprinted, while very pale colors may be harder to see against the white canvas. For the best results, choose a well-defined image with good contrast between the main elements.

Tapestry and needlework is a very technical skill, so we print your photo or design directly onto the fabric allowing you to stitch over it. Rather than using storebought designs, this allows total customization so you can create a gorgeous custom photo tapestry for your home, or make a special homemade personalized photo gift. There's no need for a color map, or tracing patterns, as your photo is there on the needlepoint printed canvas already! When printing on the custom tapestry from photos, we use a digital printing process which ensures that your custom needlepoint canvas is in full color, and is permanent.
If you need extra space around your design (framing, stitching, etc), make sure to add this white space within the design interface as we only add 3/4" extra white space on top of the print the dimensions selected on the design interface.
As the tapestry fabric is coated cotton with several holes on it, it is important to use darker/ high contrast images to make sure that the final print is clearly visible and easy to sew on. White or light-coloured images will result in a faint print that will be difficult to work with.
We provide a printed Color Reference Sheet featuring your original image alongside swatches of the main colours. While highly detailed images may not show every single shade, all key tones are included to help guide your yarn selection.
Choose a simple cut edge for a clean, minimal look, or add a neat bias-bound finish, available in four color options. Bias binding covers the raw edges of your tapestry canvas, helping to reduce fraying and prevent threads from snagging as you stitch. It also makes the edges softer and more comfortable to handle, keeping your project tidy while you work.
Upload your photo through the design tool, select your canvas size, and place your order. We print your image onto 100% cotton canvas using a high-resolution process that shows every stitch grid clearly, making it straightforward to follow when stitching.

Lower mesh counts suit bold patterns and larger stitches, while higher counts offer more room for intricate detail.

Its paired-thread construction provides a traditional foundation for needlepoint and tapestry, while the firm finish helps support your work on larger pieces. You can also use it as waste canvas to guide cross-stitch on another fabric, then dampen the canvas and carefully withdraw its threads once stitching is complete.
