What is a Coarse Fabric?

Coarse fabrics are those which lack delicacy of texture or structure. The fabrics themselves aren't fine. A common assumption is that coarse fabrics are all rough to the touch, or stiff, however this is not the case. Some textiles, such as our Gaia Eco Woven 100% Recycled fabric or our Cotton Calico are actually soft fabrics. These are ideal for making clothes and other garments. Some coarse fabrics are quite stiff, some are stretchy like our Scuba Crepe, while others are not. You can choose from light weight, mid weight or even heavy weight coarse fabrics.

How Your Coarse Fabric is Finished

When you use our design tool to create your custom prints for your coarse material you can opt to have it sent to you in one of a few ways.

  • As is - we'll send your material as it comes with a white border around the edge of your print, so that you can cut it how you want to when you receive it.
  • Cut on The Line - this will leave no white edges at all. One of our experts will cut your fabric, on the line of the print for you, before sending.
  • Hemmed - You can choose from two different types of hemming, and you can also choose the color of the thread (black or white) that is used for the hem.

Overlocked - Stitches completely over the edges of your fabric

Baby hem - Either a single fold or two fold hem, which is stitched with a straight stitch. Ensure you take account the fabric which will be used for the hem when you select your coarse material size.

  • Light fabrics - 2 fold hem which will take up 0.23" - 0.31", totaling 0.47"- 0.63" for all edges
  • Medium fabrics that fray - 2 fold hem which will take up 0.59"- 0.78", totaling 1.37" - 1.57" for all edges
  • Heavy fabrics, fabrics that are still or are no-fray - single fold hem which will take up 0.59"- 0.78", totaling 1.37" - 1.57" for all edges

Make a Collage

If you can’t decide on which photo to use, you can upload multiple images and create a photo collage. This can be done using one of our pre-set montage templates, or you can create your own entirely from scratch. It’s super easy to do and the possibilities are endless.

How to add your collage to your product

Step 1 – Click the start design button & select your product options.

Step 2 – Go to the ‘Images & Text Tools’ tab, click the ‘add images/Text’ button on your product & ‘Select Images to Upload’ or use the Facebook/Instagram tabs.

Step 3 – Choose the images you want to use for your collage, upload & select them from the uploaded photos list.

Step 4 – Click ‘Create montage’ & select your collage style.

Step 5 – Add the collage to your design.

Hints and Tips

  • The more images you add to your collage the smaller each image will be. Fewer images will be larger and give you more clarity and detail.
  • The more people in an image, the less detail there will be. If you have 10 images of a group of five friends, each person will be smaller than if you have 10 images on just one person.
  • Try to make sure that the longest side of each image is around 3.93". There is a handy ruler built into the design tool to help you with this.
  • Smaller products will not be able to fit as many images as larger ones will.

We print all of our coarse fabrics digitally

We use one of our different methods of printing. These include pigment and dye sublimation printing. Every printing method we use will bond your custom design to your chosen fabric in full color, permanently. Dye sublimation is a process that takes two different steps; firstly printing your custom design onto a transfer sheet, which then permanently bonds your personalized print to the coarse fabric. Pigment printing works especially well on natural fabrics; it's a very localized method, applying the colored dyes directly to the fabric, and building the design up.
